Queer Brand Spotlight: Ronny Bass

By Mere Abrams

Ronny Bass was founded nearly on a whim in the summer 2020, when I wound up living in a dreamy barn in Western North Carolina after relocating out of Brooklyn at the top of covid. Around the same time a group of local friends, my partner and I finished up a big fundraiser for Black lives, I went through a tumultuous exit from a subpar job - and the two experiences helped me understand that 1. There was a lot more out there for me than that, and 2. I had enough community backing this to help me make the leap.

Statement On the Anti-Trans and Don't Say Gay Bills

Statement On the Anti-Trans and Don't Say Gay Bills

As I sit here to write this, with tears rolling down my cheeks, I am enraged and saddened by the current state of the world and the harmful legislation and messages being used to attack LGBTQ and trans youth. When I was a queer and gender non-conforming kid, I didn't hear the word gay, and I didn't have access to information about gender or gender-affirming care. That caused tremendous confusion, struggle, anxiety, loneliness, and isolation. Throughout late adolescence and young adulthood, I was incredibly privileged to have access to people, spaces, and services that allowed me to more fully understand...

Trans Day of Visibility 2022

Trans Day of Visibility 2022

This TDOV, we are celebrating what it looks like to bring our full selves to the things we do, and that often means bringing our transness and all of the experiences and self-work that got us to where we are today. Visibility can be complicated– especially in the current political climate. However, we want to remind you that your existence is powerful, and you can create change by simply doing the things that make you feel good and sharing your gifts, passions, and experiences with the world. Celebrating trans visibility doesn’t have to be about doing or being anything extraordinary. It’s...

Happy 1st Birthday to Us!

Happy 1st Birthday to Us!

To the Urbody family,On our 1st birthday, we thought it would be fun to share a story from our early days of bringing the Urbody vision to life. On May 26, 2019, Anna and I sat down on her mom’s bedroom floor and cut underwear into pieces. We carefully and thoughtfully constructed the pieces back together with safety pins to create garments with the functionality, fit, and style we envisioned. Fast forward 6 months and we were on a plane to Montreal for our first meeting with our fit team to start formally developing our first collection of functional underwear and...

Beyond Bodies

Beyond Bodies

The way an individual understands and experiences gender can be just as informed by other people’s perceptions and assumptions about their presentation and body (also known as gender attribution) as it can be rooted in that individual’s experience of their own body or presentation. What if society did not attach gender and sex-based stereotypes to our physical form and self-expression? In the (continuous) process of understanding my gender and relationship with my body, I continue to wonder about the roles social and gender norms play. If society hadn’t labeled me and interacted with me in a manner that was...

5 Gender-Inclusive Fashion Tips

5 Gender-Inclusive Fashion Tips

Pause and reflect on the biases and beliefs that you have about who might wear a particular clothing item and what that person or their body might look like. Consider how these biases and beliefs inform the garment design, shape, fit, and proportions used for sizing and grading. Pay attention to the way bodies, body parts, body shapes, and aesthetics are often categorized using gender, and ask yourself how you can make changes to be more inclusive. Fit garments on people of varying body types and genders and hire trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and queer folks!  Provide information about the...

International Nonbinary People’s Day

International Nonbinary People’s Day

Happy International Nonbinary People’s Day! Nonbinary gender is more than a just a label. Nonbinary is an individual and collective experience of gender. Nonbinary is a social change movement freeing everyone from the gender assumptions and stereotypes assigned to them.  Nonbinary gender creates space for each person to acknowledge and celebrate the masculine and feminine, and their relationship with womanhood and manhood, without being defined by or confined to either one.
